Gelato with a Twist

Cafe Gelato, Victoria Park

For your late night coffee and ice-cream needs in Victoria Park.

L and I had a lengthly discussion after our dinner in East Perth, mostly about Perth having no where to go for late night coffee. By late night, we meant still open at 8pm. We literally spent over 30 minutes trying to find a place that would be open on a Sunday night for coffee. Our last resort was Daily Planet in Mount Lawley. We made our way to East Victoria Park, with the intention to visit The Sparrow’s Nest, but for some reason, they were closed. So we were back at to beginning. Then we remembered that Cafe Gelato was in the Entertainment book, and we had passed it earlier. Hooray! So we made our way back down Albany Highway, and thankfully, it was still open, at 8:30pm.

If it’s food you’re after, they’ve got you sorted!
Many interesting gelato flavours on offer at Cafe Gelato!

We sat outside on a vintage couch to ourselves, basking in the cool breeze on that summer’s night. The place was buzzing with people sitting inside and outside. We awed at the pretty sight of gelato flavours that were available, but unfortunately were too full to have any! Cafe Gelato also sold tea and teaware, kitchenware, hampers (it was Christmas period at the time), packaged food, and more. Cafe Gelato also prides themselves as a photo lab, in which they offer a dark room so that amateurs or avid photographers can their develop prints.

Cute miscellaneous things that you can buy!
Christmas hampers also on sale for the jolly good season.
Tea to go! Chamomile and Vanilla tea, and Three Mint tea ($3.50 regular/$4 large)

L chose to have a chamomile and vanilla tea, as chamomile citrus had sold out, and I had organic mint tea, using Pukka tea leaves. They told us that they were shutting at 9pm, so we had to have our teas in take-away cups, which was fine. However, we did not realise how scorching hot the take away cups were going to be. It honestly took us a good 15 minutes until we could drink it, but only after we got a cup and some cold water to mix the tea in. My organic mint (Three Mint) tea was just what I needed after consuming a feast of a dinner, as it helped me to feel relaxed and lessened that feeling of eating too much. L’s chamomile and vanilla tea had a very mild taste of vanilla, but was quite an aromatic tea.

We knew it was time to go when they were packing up inside. We both wish that Perth had more late-night places to go to. From the top of my head, I can only think of two, but I wish there was a place in our city where you can go to chill out, have some tea or coffee before calling it a night. It is definitely what is lacking in the Perth food scene, with many places shutting down by 10pm. It is only fortunate that Cafe Gelato is somewhere you can go to relax, and have one or more of their interesting gelato flavours, or have a drink of the many that are on offer.

Rating: (based on tea)  7 out of 10.

  1. I always have the same problem! So difficult trying to find a cafe that’s open till late :( although I noticed the new San Churros in Vic Park was still open even at 10pm last time I went passed! I think the one in Northbridge is open late as well.

    1. Hi Jenny! We totally agree, it can be such a task sometimes in Perth! I do like San Churros opening hours, especially on the weekends! Apart from franchises like San Churros, it is quite difficult to find an independent cafe open late at such times. Thanks for the comment :).
